Montanita vs Mancora

Montanita vs Mancora

Somewhere in the west coast of Ecuador lies Montanita. Also known as surfers and parties paradise of the country. Not really ‘on the way’ to other destinations, but do take a few hour diversion and decide yourself if it’s worth the interest. With a few days to spare I’ve decided to give it a go, since I haven’t seen a beach for a month or so now, what’s to lose? (more…)

Quito. The middle of the world.

Quito. The middle of the world.

After many hours of but rubbing on numerous buses, we’ve finally crossed 8th country border and reached Quito.IMG_6648

From what looked like a 4hour journey from frontera to Quito, turned out to be 6 hours on a curvy roads around Andes mountains. Should also mention, that bus broke twice and we needed to change into a different one, which was already full with people. Exhausted, hungry and angry at God knows who, we arrived to north terminal just to find that it doesn’t have an ATM and is in the middle of nowhere. Walked with backpacks a bit and problem was sorted- ATM found, we can take the bus and get out of here!

Public transport in Quito is cheap, bus ride cost $0.25.

Scene from Salento and the beauty of the Valle de Cocora

Salento is a charming little city of about 7000 inhabitants set in the heart of Colombia’s Zona Cafetera, where over 50% of the country’s coffee is produced. It’s a town of colorful buildings that line imperfectly charming little streets, that lead to the main square, or if you go the opposite direction, you’ll end up in the mountains. Other than sipping on a warm cup of Colombian coffee while taking in the picture perfect landscapes, there are other great outdoor activities, like horseback riding, hiking or visiting the coffee farms. It’s a land where the clouds never let go of mountain tops and rain is always moments away. Day trip to La Piedra del Penol and Guatape

Day trip to La Piedra del Penol and Guatape

For the second day in Medellin, we decided to get out of town with a day trip to La Piedra del Penol and the town of Guatape, based on recommendations from both tripadvisor and people. We took an early bus from Medellín’s Terminal de Norte and settled in for a few hour trip out to La Piedra. Bus cost C$11,500 one way, also I advice you to sit in the middle on the left side of a bus for the best views.

Before going I googled the place just to see what I’m getting myself into.
La Piedra is…well… from the first glimpse a giant rock sitting all by itself on top of a hill, that has 740 stairs in all! But when I got there, oh boy it does indeed look magnificent! My only question was- where the hell did it landed from?! (also, it looks like a dinosaur egg) (more…)

Around Medellin and finally finding Pablo

Around Medellin and finally finding Pablo

Medellin is synonymous with the name Pablo Escobar, it’s un-deniable. Pablo Escobar also known as “The King of Cocaine” was a Colombian born drug kingpin, who had a peak net worth of $30 billion dollars during his lifetime. He ran the infamous drug trafficker, smuggler, and racketeer who ran the Medellin Drug Cartel. At its height, the Medellin carel controlled 80% of the world’s cocaine market. He was eventually imprisoned, but continued to run the Medellin Cartel from inside. Using his connections, he escaped in 1992, and remained in hiding until he was shot and killed in 1993. (more…)
