On a days off we like to explore! And this time we chose to visit the islands- Koh Rong and Koh Samloem. Loads of travel agents in Sihanoukville offering ferry tickets or day trips for this. After walking around for the best price and option, we decided to take a trip for $19, which includes breakfast, lunch and snorkelling equipment. It’s a one day trip, stopping at both islands. So we arranged to stay in Koh Rong for one night and jump into next day boat. Ferry ticket to Koh Rong costs $15 return and takes 2.5h one way, speed boat costs $30 return and takes 45min. We paid extra $4 for meals plus stop at the other island, which is pretty good deal. (more…)

We decided Seam Reap wasn’t our cup of tea and after 2nights grabbed the Ospreys and jumped into a night bus towards south Cambodia, more specifically- Sihanoukville, with an idea of staying by the beach for 3/4 nights. First impression- hot, sandy beach. That’s all we needed right then. We didn’t book any hotel as it always turns out cheaper to find the hidden treasures (or not!). (more…)

I always had a little dream with a perfect picture in my head- sunset horse riding on a beach. And had to wait for almost 26 years to make this come true. While looking for ferry tickets to Koh Rong, spotted a poster for horse riding in one of the travel agents. Emailed the Liberty Ranch and next day I’m on a horse, watching the sun go down in the sea. As easy as it is! (more…)

First impression of Siem Reap: busy, hot, dusty, crowded, touristy, loud city. Can’t think about more synonyms for now but you should get the picture. Secondly, dollar is widely accepted, apart from $2 note.
Found a little ‘Mith La Or’ guesthouse five min walk from main night market street for $6 for double room/night. Cheapest so far, and believe me we did spend time on foot knocking on hostels doors and inquiring about prices. But you can get a decent dorm for $7-$10 per bed. There is also local place to eat on the corner from our guesthouse with meals for $1. It’s not tourists restaurant but more like canteen with amazing food. If you’re not a fan of street food, don’t bother going there. (more…)

Trip from Ko Tao to Bangkok cost 800THB and took twelve hours by boat and then bus. Walk around the island for best package deals, as prices vary from 800 to 1200THB. We decided not to stay in Bangkok because of current political issues and went straight to train station to catch a train to Cambodia. There are two slow trains a day from Hualamphong train station in Bangkok to the Thai border town of Aranya Prathet (48B, six hours); take the 5.55am service, otherwise you’ll end up spending the night at the border, as it’s open 7am to 8pm. Train ride is ok, as we slept most of a time. It’s simple but spacious, has toilets and constantly passing fruit sellers. (more…)

Crossing Malaysia/Thailand border by land and finally reaching Krabi
Journey towards Thailand started with a lowest unsuccessful note. Our plan was to take a flight Colombo- Kuala Lumpur and cross Thailand border by land. First of all, we were late to catch the flight as got stuck in road works in Colombo. Air Asia staff was kind enough and reopened the check-in to let us in. Landed in Malaysia 11pm (+2hours ahead of Sri Lanka time) and spend a night at the airport, which has lots of cafes and free wifi if you sit next to starbucks. Forgot to mention that you get a free visa on arrival if you’re EU citizen. (more…)
