Crazy time to be alive, right?! It is unlike anything that came before, worldwide stagnation, lockdown and social distancing to curb the spread of this pandemic. Travel industry was the first to go down as people stopped moving around. Following almost six months of staying home I finally got out of my box to test the waters and write a different travel guide to those interested in what traveling looks like post Covid19.
Spain might not be the safest place to go on holiday you might think but please don’t be fooled by the general news on TV. I came to Mallorca for five days and ended up changing my flight twice! That’s how safe I felt and was not ready to get back to autumn weather.
I have to be honest. Mallorca stole my heart.
Warm, sandy beaches. Epic windy roads. Quiet hilltop towns and surprisingly empty streets. It can all be found in the beautiful Balearic island of Mallorca.
I’ve spent wonderful twelve days on the island and and the experience was beyond amazing. I decided to put this travel guide together and share my experience on staying safe while enjoying every bit of Mallorca.
Getting Around On Mallorca
I highly recommend renting a car here in Mallorca. It will give you a lot more freedom to explore the island at your own pace and reach most secluded beaches. I would also suggest renting a small car since a lot of roads in Mallorca are narrow and parking spaces are tight.
Tip: use third party access waiver insurance to significantly reduce renting fees. I used confused.com insurance, which saved me heaps of £££,.
Southern Mallorca – Santanyi Region
The southeast of the island consists of a gently rolling landscape with small, romantic bays – “Calas” – typical villages, almond and fruit groves as well as fields and farm land.
I’ve been to many beaches in the World but I think Santanyi region has some of best I’ve ever seen in my life! Some of my favorites are Cala Llombards, Calo des Moro and Torent de Cala Pi.
Turquoise waters, cliffs for jumping, topless sun bathers and few tourists! I loved everything about it.
Where to Stay
Situated in a small town of Ses Salines and only 10min from most pristine beaches Finca Sa Carrotja is your home away from home. Ancient stone house of Sa Carrotja is one of the oldest in the village dating from the 16th century. It has been completely restored preserving the traditional and original character of the house, whilst adapting to the comfort needs of modern living.
It felt so secluded, away from noise and yet so close to the coast. If you want to get away from the mad rush of everyday life, relax, enjoy some peace and quiet – this is the right place for you! Breakfast in the garden, evening swim in the pool was a perfect holiday combination.
Central Mallorca
It’s all about small authentic Mallorcan village life. Less developed area for tourism than other areas of the island, here you will find a tranquil, unspoilt culture. Close to mountains and historical towns of Sineu and Petra, bringing you unfiltered version of Mallorca.
Where to stay
Curolla is located in one of the historic buildings of the town of Maria de la Salut. Main bulding dates from before 1940, revealing its majesty and typical Mallorcan stately architecture.
Their tasteful and spacious rooms will immerse you into the Mediterranean way of life from the first moment. To say the least I absolutely loved the garden area – charming Mallorcan decor blended with palm trees and summer air. It’s perfect.
Northern Mallorca
Long windy roads, wild beaches and breathtaking sunsets. I absolutely recommend driving all the way north to Cap de Formentor – a spectacular place, located on the northernmost point of the island and has quite a few lookout points with spectacular views of the coast. Its highest point, Fumart, is 384m above sea level and is reached by driving from Port De Pollenca by narrow snake like roads.
Where to stay
I am not a fan of big resorts or all inclusive but maybe I have this unpopular opinion because I’ve never stayed in a 4* accommodation. Given how quiet Mallorca and rest of the world is during the pandemic I gave a shot to try a luxury resort to see if it can change my opinion. OH boy it did. Las Gaviotas was the luxury I didn’t expect but yet so needed in my life. I’ve booked a vip suite at the top floor and was blown away with what I’ve received. Room was SO spacious, comfortable & stylish I didn’t was to leave. And my bed… the size and comfort of it deserved a medal. To be fair, my three day route looked like this: restaurant – pool – room, only because it offers wide variety of facilities hence, why would I like to leave the premises?
Breakfast and dinner was included and came in a buffet style. The mix of local Mediterranean and international cuisine presented a wide selection of dishes that included vegetarian options too. Kitchen always uses fresh local produce with some coming straight from own vegetable garden.
Pools, a spa, gym and yoga classes to keep guests busy and active. Did I mention a pool bar with live guest DJ or jazz singers?!
Eastern Mallorca – Cala Ratjada
Beaches beaches and more beaches. Living by this mantra, as after-all, I am a beach lover and a secret mermaid. Last time in Mallorca I skipped this side of the island because of the lack of time and too many options. Today, I feel grateful to lay on the beach with a sound of waves and not masses of people. To my surprise, Cala Mesquida had blue-ass water and close to zero humans. Perfect for swimming and morning meditation.
Where to stay
Ecological concept is what attracted me to check out the Mamboo Hotel. It was renovated with solar-panels and heat pump to reach the highest environmental levels. Eco products are chosen to be used all around the premises to stay environmentally friendly.
Hotel offers stylish rooms with minimalistic rustic design and rain shower in the bathroom. You will be treated with healthy breakfast options made with local products brought straight from the market.
A beautiful garden with a large swimming pool as well as an indoor and outdoor bar turn the Mamboo into a small urban oasis. Time at the pool, local cocktails and friendly staff was highlights of my stay.
Two week in Mallorca wasn’t enough as I could easily spend here months.
